In the current economic climate it is important to make the right choice, to have confidence in your contractor or supplier to give satisfaction and guarantee success. ESSA aims to raise awareness to the Events and Exhibition sector of the importance of using a contractor or supplier that is a member of a recognised association, giving the end user assurances of the best possible service.
Board Level Commitment
Research shows that the ESSA membership badge is increasingly seen as a mark of quality and accountability. This can perhaps be best explained by the consistent, unanimous support that “standards” has attracted in every board level strategy discussion since the association’s conception, and that this is echoed by ESSA’s members in both qualitative and quantitative research projects and via direct feedback from customers. Furthermore the Board has tasked the secretariat to ensure it has a seat at the table on any platform where guidance, standards or policies are written which may have an effect on our members, so that members views are represented and incorporated into the decision making process, including HSE, BS & ISO’s. In terms of standards, the following sets out what it means to be an ESSA member and additionally describes some of the additional standards-based schemes that many members choose to adopt, often with support and guidance from ESSA Technical.
Membership itself is designed to facilitate and demonstrate a commitment to standards in the following ways:
In addition some members choose to be part of other standards based schemes noted below:
SSIP Schemes (Safety Schemes in Procurement)
SSIP schemes such as CHAS, SAFEContractor and Constructionline all assess suppliers against suggested competency criteria from the CDM Regulations. Applicants are required to submit by post or email detailed descriptions of how they comply with key criteria along with documented evidence. Registration to one of these schemes is achieved through this remote process, assessors do not visit your premises, however the schemes are thorough and are themselves subject to audit by SSIP.
International ISO Standards
International Standards are all structured in the same basic plan-do-check-act management system format meaning that businesses wishing to achieve certification to more than one can do so by integrating the common features of each standard and avoid unnecessary duplication of process. Standards are audited and certificated by external auditing bodies (UKAS accredited ones are generally regarded as the best) who visit your place(s) of work in person and can speak with any member of staff during their investigations. BS8901 and its successor ISO20121 have become best known in the events industry but there are a number of others to choose depending on your operational priorities and your customers’ preferences:
|ISO 9001||Quality (approx. 1,100,000 adopters worldwide)|
|OHSAS 18001||Health and Safety (approx. 60,000 adopters worldwide )|
|ISO 22000||Food Safety (approx. 20,000 adopters worldwide)|
|ISO 14001||Environment (approx. 250,000 adopters worldwide)|
|ISO 27001||Information Security (approx. 17,500 adopters worldwide)|
|ISO 50001||Energy Management (approx. 500 adopters worldwide)|
|ISO 22301||Business Continuity Management|
|ISO 20000||IT Service Management|
|BS 11000||Collaborative Business Relationships|
Investors in People
IIP’s central premise is that “People are the engine of success for responsible, sustainable and profitable businesses - and people can change the world, if they are given the support they need”. The scheme is all about effective people management and development and allows organisations to achieve the following levels of accreditation:
Educate your buyers by promoting ESSA in your exhibitor manuals, and referring them to the ESSA website when looking for a contractor. If your exhibitor buys with confidence and receives a good service, has a stress free experience and enjoys a successful show, chances are they will exhibit again next year which can only be a great testament, not only to you as the Organiser, but to ESSA for proving time and time again that using an approved supplier does guarantee success.
Educate your buyers and users by promoting ESSA on your website and other resource portals. Suggest they go to the ESSA website when looking for a contractor. If ESSA members work in your halls you should have less headaches as they have many years of experience in the industry and know what they are doing. Your clients should also receive a good service, and have a stress free experience so the chances are they will be back again and again.
If you have never exhibited before it can be a pretty stressful experience and even if you have exhibited it can still be quite stressful, but it doesn’t have to be if you use an ESSA Member.
ESSA Members are accepted by their peers, submit company accounts, proof of insurance, and two referees and subject to ad hoc site visit checks. We take very seriously the use of the ESSA logo and members are required to adhere to the ESSA Code of Conduct and Quality Service Charter.
The ESSA Bond insures against work undertaken by some of our members in the case of non-completion, guaranteeing that the work with be carried out and completed by another ESSA member, although it is rarely used.
