Every New Year brings with it a degree of ‘mixed bag-ness’, don’t you agree? A few highs, a few lows, and the inevitable middle of the road moments that are done, dusted and forgotten about before we know it.

Such peaks and troughs are to be expected in any industry, admittedly, but perhaps more so when you work in the ever fast-paced and energetic event supplier and services arena. It is most likely as a result most of us will have developed a few tactics to help navigate the ups and downs.

But how well prepared are we to cope when life throws us a particularly significant curveball, as was the case in 2017?

Last year was one of our most successful years on record, with countless major contract wins, new industry partnerships and international projects, as well as a couple of award shortlistings (and even a win!), under our belts. But we also found ourselves mourning the devastating loss of our MD, Steve who passed away in October; delivering a huge blow to us all, not least because in our 57-year history we have always been a very close-knit family run firm.

It’s important to do more than just ‘keep the ship steady’ when the going gets tough… especially when you have particularly large (sometimes even clown like) shoes to fill! And sad as Steve’s passing was,it was also a reminder to us all to live life to the full, and to make the most of every single opportunity that comes our way. Anyone that knew Steve knows that’s exactly what he would have wanted … and so that’s what we did!

Europa International has always been a rather resilient set up, weathering the bad times, including numerous recessions, purple flared trousers, and even the dire disappointment of Rocky V. But with each and every setback we’ve simply taken a deep breath before going at life just that little bit harder, faster and better!

2017 had its challenges, don’t get me wrong, but who would want to write off a year where we were shortlisted in the Furniture Supplier of the year category at the inaugural Exhibition News Elite Awards; the year when we delivered more rolls of carpet and funky black barstools than you can shake a stick at, and when we partnered with our good friends at Contemporary Event Structures to furnish their unique Hybrid Multi-Deck event structure?

And although it would have been easy to simply ‘keep the ship steady’ whilst we all came to terms with everything, it was far more important to us as a team to ensure that we carried on delivering the same fun-filled customer service-led approach to our customers – old and new – that has become synonymous with our brand.

After all, that was the legacy that Steve wanted to leave behind. One of a firm that put the needs of its clients first and foremost, by delivering excellent products and an excellent experience to all, whilst operating in a fast-paced industry that he was incredibly proud to have been associated with all of his working life.

And so, whilst there is no denying that Steve’s passing was incredibly difficult for everyone here at the firm – and indeed the industry as a whole – anyone that knew him would know that rather than allow us to enter a period of mourning we found ourselves more motivated than ever to do him proud, with Steve’s sister, Karen, and his son, Stephen Junior (aka Smurf) - both of whom have Europa-coloured blood running through their veins - at the helm of Europa HQ.

And with almost two thirds of a century behind them, Europa International is looking forward to the next decade and beyond; continuously renewing their commitment to staying ‘on trend’ with their products, and on point with their delivery.

The continued support that we have received from the ESSA community has been overwhelming, and no doubt has played a big role in what was an absolutely cracking twelve months in the grand scheme of things. It is also thanks to all of our industry comrades, partners, clients and suppliers that we’re now well on our way to ensuring that 2018 is going to be even bigger, better and more customer-service-led-and-fun-filled for Europa than ever before.
