The event industry golf day In the Rough, organised by ESSA and held at Celtic Manor Resort on 19 July, attracted 124 golfers in 31 teams whose charitable donations throughout the day and at the evening dinner, attended by 160 guests, raised over £7,000 for Sparks children’s medical research charity and Macmillan.

ESSA director, Andrew Harrison, commented “In the Rough 2018 delivered on every level, our golfers were delighted with the course, the hospitality provided by the tee sponsors came in for particularly high praise. All attendees were treated to a warm and sunny day and the evening dinner was a great social event for all those attending with plenty to get involved in.”

The golfers were offered a traditional golfer’s breakfast before a shotgun start at 11am sharp. All of the teams were provided with two buggies, and as they left the clubhouse it was somewhat reminiscent of the original Le Mans start.

In the Rough features both an individual and team competition, with Dean Dyer of Electra Events & Exhibitions taking first place, followed, in second place by Johnno Gordon of Mash Media, and James Rawlins of Electra Events & Exhibitions coming third. The winner of the team competition was Electra Events and Exhibitions, with Cite Building Services coming second, and Perton Signs coming third. The Stake Holder salver was won for the third year in a row by the supplier community.

“All of the feedback we have received has been very positive and the success of an event like this does depend upon the companies that are prepared to support the event. I would especially like to thank our headline sponsors beMatrix, and our event partners – Mash Media, Jungheinrich Event Hire, beMatrix, InEvexco, GES and Perton Signs – whose contribution made the event possible,” added Harrison.

This year there was a full complement of tee sponsors with many providing refreshments, entertainment and mini competitions on their tees. Tee Sponsors for In the Rough 2018 were InEvexco, Briggs Equipment, Exhibition News, Modex Exhibitions, AEO/AEV, Aluvision, Freeman, Towergate, The Barista, Concept Furniture International, Jungheinrich Event Hire, GES, Ottimo, Electra Events & Exhibitions, Reeds Carpets, Equinox Designs, Olympia London, and beMatrix.

“I think that we can say In the Rough 2018 was a great success, everyone who attended seems to have had an enjoyable day and we are already looking at plans for In the Rough 2019,” concluded Harrison.
